Feathered Friends
Please remember our fine feathered friends…
Now that the REALLY cold and snowy weather is upon us, please don’t forget how difficult it is for our little friends to find food on their own. Feeding birds from a feeder outside your window can offer many hours of entertainment to you and your family. (And your cat if you have one.) Many birds wouldn’t survive the cold winter months for us to enjoy in the spring and summer if it weren’t for people’s diligence in keeping their feeders full of their favorite seeds. This time of year they need even more food to support their hastened metabolism that keeps them from freezing. Some of their favorite seed is: Oiled sunflower hearts, Safflower hearts, Thistle, and Cracked corn. Buy it in bulk and make your own gourmet mix and save money. If you’re a new bird fan, be patient, it takes the birds a day or two to spot a new feeder, but be patient, once they do, word spreads quickly! To get the most enjoyment out of this pastime, pick up a simple backyard bird book and learn to identify your new visitors. Soon you’ll be able to spot the changes in the seasons by the changes in your visitors. If you have lots of squirrels in your neighborhood, don’t fret; most supply stores carry a wide variety of squirrel baffles that are very effective.
